July’s Featured Wine – Second Flight

Melissa:  I’m terribly remiss in this write up as this is a feature I wanted to share with all of you last month.  Again, bad Melissa.  I should have to go without wine for a day.  Pffft, who am I kidding??  So finally, without further adieu, I bring you a wine I discovered on a Girls’ Weekend… Alcyone Tannat dessert wine.  Tannat is a red wine grape, historically grown in South West France in the Madiran AOC and is now one of the most prominent grapes in Uruguay, where it is considered the “national grape”.  Much like the end of the meal, the end of this month really need only be celebrated with one feature… And possibly more than one helping.  This wine will make you completely rethink desert wines!!

Viñedo de los Vientos Alcyone Tannat

From Viñedo de los Vientos Uruguay, Alcyone Tannat is one of the most delicious dessert wines in the world! Once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand. It’s not just for wine snobs anymore!

What They Say:  (Viñedo de los Vientos) Our Tannat Dessert wine instills a calmness with it’s polished tannins, radiant yet amber purple hue and it’s honey like texture.  Touched with a bouquet of winter flowers, Madagascan vanilla bean and while apple mint indulged with a warmth and savor of white cacao soufflé.  As the story of Alcyone ends with tranquility, so does the longsome finish of our wine.

(Southern Hemisphere Wine Center) Think of marshmallows with vanilla, milk chocolate and then glimpses of red cherry and fig lurking in the background. Creamy textured but not excessive in its weight or cloying to the palate, with a nicely detailed, lingering aftertaste, it really is different and there will be a lot of big fans for its unique flavor. Simply put this is extra ordinary in a most positive way and quite delicious on top of that. This is a must for those who love well made dessert wines.

What We Say:  Holy Oh My GOODNESS!  My mouth went to O-town!!  I had this brilliant wine at Sugarcane restaurant in Miami.  I can’t even begin to tell you the reactions of everyone at the table when we tasted this.  Hands down an entire table of 7 enjoyed this wine, so much so that we actually asked if we could buy the rest of the bottle to take with us.  This isn’t just a regular old dessert wine / port.  This is liquid heaven my dears.  If awesome could be bottled, it would be this stuff right here – no joke.  This is such a delicately luscious dessert wine it makes you want to sit back, relax and savior each sip.  Occasionally I find some dessert wines and port a bit thick; like they’ll coat your mouth after 3 sips.  Nothing like that here.  Just a lovely lingering taste that just makes you happy you decided to drink your dessert.

Food Accompaniments:  On it’s own, or over French vanilla ice cream – OMG must try that!!
