November’s Featured Wines – Second Flight

Melissa:  I’m begging forgiveness once again my friends.  It’s been beyond crazy at the Two Winey Bitches North Jersey offices.  I’ve been sitting on this write up for no good reason because honestly I want to shout from the rooftops my love for this featured wine!!  You know we’re huge fans of Layer Cake by Jayson Woodbridge, well I was talking to my wine guy George a while back about some selections and he said he was finally getting in 2 cases of Cherry Pie.  Needless to say, my eyes lit up and I immediately called dibs on 2 bottles (some greedy person dibbed an entire case!!).  See, as the story goes, Mr. Woodbridge had wanted to make a Pinot Noir and sought out the owners of Stanly Ranch, on the Napa side of the Carneros appellation because their grapes were becoming well known as some of the most sought after Pinot Noir grapes in California. They told him they would give him a small allocation to make wine, but future allocations would depend on the quality of the wine he made.  After tasting the 2007 Cherry Pie Pinot Noir from the barrel, and deeming it one of the best ever made from their grapes (no big shock for fans of Jayson’s work), the owners of the ranch granted him free rein to choose from the very best blocks of the property for his wine.  Needless to say, the allocation of fruit is now whatever he asks for.  OK, so I pulled that from the website, but I LOVE the story!!  You know what else I love?  This here Pinot Noir!  I’m a huge Pinot fan to begin with (as anyone who reads the blog knows, it’s my go to wine – my comfort food), I think there is more ability for the winemakers to leverage other subtle flavors that can be overpowered by bolder grapes.

Cherry Pie Pinot Noir Stanly Ranch ~ 2010

Cherry Pie Pinot Noir Stanly Ranch ~ 2010

*Original oil on canvas by TR Colletta

What They Say: 2010 Stanly Ranch Pinot Noir:  The nose is redolent of dark bing cherries, hints of black and white pepper on meat roasting in a wood oven, memories of English plum pudding steaming at Christmas, a touch of saddle leather, warm spice and tobacco at a distance.  The nose continues to build and unfold with hints of violets and Portobello mushrooms blackberries, minerals and sweet earth.  The flavors are very concentrated, after some time in the glass, they open up to show beautiful balance and sophistication, and an elegant, glyceral texture.  Dark and intense fruit carries all through the palette, the finish then lingers uncovering a wisp of anise, blackberry honey, and golden pastry roasting in the oven… Cherry Pie.  It shows tons of textural richness in its sweet candied red fruit, there is no shortage of lush overt fruit this year.  Clearly this wine will be very hard to resist and pairs well with a very large range of foods.

What We Say:  I decided to share a bottle of this with friends who offered to have us over for dinner while dealing with Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath.  They had heat and DirectTV and offered up some Sunday football.  Also noteworthy was the husband came over and spent 3 hours with a chainsaw helping cut up our downed trees.  How else could I properly say thank you other than sharing a coveted (yep, I said coveted) wine?  Pop open this yummy treat before dinner then serve with whatever you want.  Really, this is just as fantastic to sit and sip while watching or enjoy with a nice dinner.  We paired it with pepperoni pizza and it was delish!!  Tip of the hat to you Mr. Woodbridge!!  Vintagepoint.com claims:  We drink a lot of it before, during and after meals.  It never tires the palate.  I couldn’t agree more, this is a fantastic Pinot that is meant to be enjoyed, it’s up do you to decide if you want to share.

October’s Featured Wines – First Flight

Sorry this is a few days late, but I had so many delicious wines last month that I couldn’t decide what to feature.  I know, I know… what a terrible problem to have.  I’m just lucky enough to have friends who love wine as much as I do and love to try new wines as much as I do.  In fact, if anyone reading this is in South Florida, I highly recommend trying The Naked Grape in Wilton Manors.  My dear friend and “partner in wine”, Nicole, introduced me to this cute little wine & tapas bar where we tasted the wine featured here today.  So, I’m paying it forward and sharing with our South Florida friends.  As for the discovery we found there, read on…

Priest Ranch Petite Sirah – 2009

What They Say:  Our Priest Ranch Petite Sirah offers aromas of warm blackberry pie and soft ripe plum.  The palate, offers flavors of black cherry, anise, and allspice all balanced wonderfully with its polished tannins.  The finish is sultry and spicy with a hint of chocolate.

(This is technically a description for their 2008 vintage which is what is on the website.  I’m including in lieu of a 2009 review.)

What We Say:  Wine guru Robert Parker gave both the 2007 & 2008 vintages a rating of 95 and 92 respectively.  He says that the wine could improve with some aging and I have to say I think the 2009 falls right in line with that recommendation.  However, you won’t be disappointed drinking it soon after purchase.  My friends & I ordered a bottle of the Priest Ranch Petite Sirah, but realized after a few sips that the wine (and our experience) would be better served if the wine was decanted.  Thankfully, we were in a wine bar where decanters were readily available.  What a difference that made… Giving it some time to open in the decanter really brought out the true flavors of the wine; jammy fruit upfront with a spicy finish.  We thoroughly enjoyed this wine and it went well with the array of tapas we ordered.  In fact, we ordered a second bottle of another Petite Sirah and it was a let down after the Priest Ranch.  Go with what you know!

September’s Featured Wines – First Flight

Summer’s winding down, the kids are headed back to school and the days are getting shorter.  What better way to usher in cooler weather – for me that means 80 degree days instead of 95 degree days – than with a really great bottle of wine.

Saldo Zinfandel By Orin Swift

What They Say:  Through the success of The Prisoner, winemaker Dave Phinney has gained access to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in the Northern California growing community. Dave decided he wanted to make a high quality Zinfandel and what he created did not fit the constraints of a single AVA.

There are grapes from Sonoma, Napa, Amador, Mendocino, and Contra Costa counties. Some of these great vineyards include Aparicio, Duarte, Pato, Eagle Point, Mattern, Taylor, Haywood and Tofanelli just to name a few.

The 2010 Saldo has a dark ruby color and intense aromas of dark cherry, cocoa powder and baking spice. The entry is rich and full, and leads into a broad mid palate with concentration and density, backed by lively acidity. The texture is soft and the tannins are polished. The finish is long with persistent notes of chocolate, berry and vanilla bean.

What We Say:  I’m a lucky girl to have so many friends that love good wine as much as I do and even luckier that they are kind enough to share it with me.  Let’s be honest, if you’re opening a beautiful bottle of wine, you want to share it with someone that actually appreciates it.  Oh and how I appreciate it.  My friends that introduced me to Saldo are huge fans of Orin Swift’s The Prisoner, which has become their signature, and brought this back with them from their visit to their tasting room in Napa.  They couldn’t say enough good things about Orin Swift’s wines in general and were excited to share the love.  And love it was.  I love a glass of wine that is such a deep deep red that you feel like you’re about to drink velvet.  And darn it, this is close.  You get chocolate and you get cherry… These are a few of my favorite things.  You also get some cranberries and spice.  Mostly, you get a great glass of wine that should be enjoyed with something that can stand up to the 15.9% alcohol content.

August’s Featured Wines – First Flight

Happy August all!  Hope everyone is staying cool out there during what is the hottest year on record.  Yipes!  Good thing we have wine to help us forget the sweltering sun outside our windows.  Yes, life is good.  I’m bringing you two lovely options to help you feel a little more calm, cool and collected until the heat subsides and the kids go back to school.

Melville 2010 Estate Pinot Noir – Sta. Rita Hills

What They Say:  Deep ruby red in color with an opulent and complex nose of black tea, persimmon, chinese five-spice, and pumpkin pie.  Fresh red and blue fruit components of plum duck sauce, raspberry reduction, and bing cherry weave seamlessly on the palate along with umami-like notes of, dashi, chanterelles, nori, and miso. The mouthfeel is plush and complete yet finishes with elegance and restraint.

What We Say:  Once upon a million years ago, I knew Vineyard Owner Brent Melville as a fun-loving stock trader in Manhattan Beach, CA.  When he gave it all up to move to Santa Barbara to start Melville Winery with his father & brother, I was excited for him & very very jealous.  I remember the first time I saw “Melville” on a restaurant menu, it was a definite smile moment.  It’s always nice to see someone achieve their dreams.  That being said, I hadn’t really spent any time with the wines until my most recent trip to LA.  And we all know how I love to spend time with wine.  My friend with whom I was staying & I have a tradition of our afternoon glass of wine together.  My wine of choice, day after day, was the Melville Pinot Noir.  I really enjoyed it… clearly.  The notes of spice & tea were most forward on my palate.  I generally prefer a more fruit-forward Pinot, but this was a great mix of both.  I wanted to drink it again and again and again.  Now, I’m happy for Brent & for me.

Kim Crawford 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

What They Say:  A bouquet of citrus and tropical fruits backed by characteristic herbaceous notes that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is famous for.  An exuberant wine brimming with flavours of pineapple and stonefruit with a hint of herbaceousness. The finish is fresh and zesty.

What We Say:  When it comes to white wines, I’m a fan of Sauvignon Blanc.  I prefer the light & crisp style of the wine over the more popular Chardonnay.  It just feels more refreshing on a hot summer day… and there are a lot of those in South Florida.  I shared a bottle of the Kim Crawford with my dad over a light family dinner of chicken & avocado salad.  The taste of the grapefruit & pineapple were a great accompaniment.  The “zesty” finish was a bit much for me, but not too much to ruin the enjoyment of the wine.  I wonder if it would have mellowed had we given it some time open up.  Overall, it was a lovely Sauvignon Blanc that can be enjoyed all summer long without breaking the bank.
