One-Sentence Summary: YEEHAW the Southern Belles with sass return!!
Melissa: I can’t begin to detail the excitement I have for the return of my Georgia peaches! These women are a lovely crazy that I’ve really been missing from the other Housewives. Yeah, I’m talking to you New York!! Before kicking off Season 4 of Real Housewives of Atlanta, the ladies take us on a flashback tour of their journey to Housewife status. I feel like I should be sipping a mint julep (Gross assumption that that is what one drinks in Atlanta), but that would require entirely too much effort that I just can’t muster, so a nice La Crema Pinot Noir will do for me.
NeNe kicks things off for the ladies. Personally, I think all the success of this show is due to this woman. She is like a cray cray ocean. You never want to turn your back on her… Bitch will cut you! Born in Queens to a financially unstable teen mother, she moved in with her Aunt in Georgia. From a very young age, she was determined to be somebody. Sadly, NeNe’s collegiate boyfriend introduced her to relationship abuse. A single mom at 25, NeNe turned to “Nude Modeling” – aka stripping – and voila, “Silk” was born and the money started flowing. Fortunately, she would eventually meet Greg who didn’t approve of her dancing and promised to give her everything she needed so she could get off the pole.
In 2003, she was cast in the Fighting Temptations… as a stripper (heehee)… and that though was all she needed! With her SAG card in hand and a few bit parts, eventually the Housewives came a-calling… They needed “a great bitch for TV”.
The mistress of the wigs was born in Pensacola Florida and relocated throughout her childhood, until settling in Connecticut. She too was convinced she would be somebody and planned to head to Hollywood. Dreams of stardom were put on hold when her parents determined her need for a fallback career, so off to nursing school she went. Seems she didn’t learn about sexual reproduction early enough in nursing school and found herself pregnant. Moving to Georgia after graduation once again preggers, she got a quickie marriage… and an even quicker divorce. Bye-bye hubby… Hello Big Poppa and financial stability.
In 2003, Kim made a (cutting room floor only) appearance in Dumb and Dumberer to kick-start her Hollywood career. Unfortunately, she didn’t really want to work hard at her acting career (um, no shock there) so Housewives it is.
Kandi got her first record deal at 16 and a Grammy at 23. This girl sets the stage for success in Hotlanta! In high school, she met the other members of Xscape, and with her brother as a guardian angel (losing him suddenly in a tragic car accident), they were introduced to Jermaine Dupri. Three albums later, the band split and Kandi found herself needing something to do so she considered song writing. Just mucking about she penned the little ditty “No Scrubs” for TLC and “Bills, Bills, Bills” for Destiny’s Child.
She’s the no-brainer “we need her” Housewife.
Cynthia started out as “just alright” in Alabama raised by a single mom. Seeing her mother in an abusive relationship, Cynthia was determined to be her own provider and not need a man to bring her down. In stark contrast to Beyoncé, Miss Cynthia doesn’t really want a ring put on it. As a matter of fact, that seems to indicate time to move on. After 2 failed engagements – first to fiancee Jason Williams (of NJ Nets fame) and second to Leon Robinson (actor) – Peter Thomas (current Mr. Cynthia Bailey) gets the distinct honor of managing to hold on to our favorite runaway bride.
With a “supermodel” career skyrocketing, Cynthia was approached to be a Housewife in 2010.
Phaedra Parks sadly didn’t appear on the show, but here’s what Bravo had to say: “Phaedra is a celebrated entertainment attorney who lives in the historic Vinings area with her husband, Apollo, and their one-year-old son Ayden. She is the Managing Partner of The Parks Group, P.C., an Atlanta-based boutique law firm that caters nationally to entertainers and athletes. An active member of the community and church, Phaedra, a self-proclaimed “Southern belle,” sits on numerous boards and is involved in multiple charities.” (Bravo.com)
Sheree Whitfield also didn’t appear on this episode but for those of you new to the Housewives, here’s a bit of background again, thanks to Bravo. “A socialite and resident of an exclusive area in Atlanta, Sheree manages her over-loaded calendar as a single mother to three children — Kairo, Kaleigh, Tierra. Sheree is committed to a rigorous daily fitness regimen to stay healthy and maintains her status as a sophisticated woman on the Atlanta social scene.” (Bravo.com)
